Elliott Collects 12th Top-10 Finish of the Season at Pocono
Chase Elliott rolled off the grid 13th Sunday afternoon at Pocono Raceway. Despite battling with a tight-handling NAPA AUTO PARTS Chevrolet for the majority of Stage 1, Elliott managed to finish inside the top 10 at the end of the 50-lap stage.
During Stage 2, crew chief Alan Gustafson used pit strategy to set the No. 24 team up for the final stage by calling Elliott to pit road just before the end of the 50-lap stage. The second-year driver ended the second stage in 18th.
Between the second and third stages, Elliott reported to the team that he felt he had a flat tire after possibly running over debris on the track. The NAPA team elected not to take any chances and called Elliott in for four fresh tires. The precautionary pit stop caused Elliott to start the final 60-lap stage in 29th.
Elliott made his charge back towards the front to recover as many lost positions as possible. As competitors made their final green-flag pit stops of the race, Elliott remained on the track. He eventually pitted with 21 laps remaining and returned to the track inside the top 15.
The driver of the No. 24 continued to climb towards the top 10, finding 11th with 12 laps to go. Two laps later, Elliott passed teammate Dale Earnhardt Jr. to re-enter the top 10 for good.
Elliott took the checkered flag in 10th for his 12th top-10 finish of the season. The result puts him seventh in the NASCAR Cup Series driver point standings with only five races remaining in the regular season.
