Elliott Overcomes Adversity to Collect First Career Top-10 Finish at the Brickyard

Chase Elliott started Sunday afternoon’s 400-mile race at the Brickyard in 24th. When the green flag waved, he charged to 18th before a caution flag waved on Lap 10, bringing the field to pit road.

As Elliott was rolling down pit road to his stall, a competitor in front of him abruptly stopped, resulting in contact and damage to the nose and rear bumper of the No. 9 NAPA AUTO PARTS Chevrolet Camaro ZL1. After assessing the damage and making the scheduled pit stop, Elliott returned to pit road for a second stop to make additional repairs to the NAPA Chevy. When he returned to the track, he was scored one lap down in 36th. The first stage ended under caution after a yellow flag waved on Lap 49 with Elliott in 31st.

Following a red flag for extensive clean up, Elliott began Stage 2 in 27th and made moves to gain track position. He was up to 21st on Lap 81 despite reporting his Chevy was handling too tight. After a scheduled green-flag pit stop, a caution flag waved on Lap 89. At the time of the caution, Elliott was a lap down, but he took the wave-around before the restart to regain the lap. Once again, the second stage concluded under caution with Elliott’s No. 9 NAPA Chevy in 25th.

Elliott took the green flag for the ensuing restart to begin Stage 3 in 28th. A caution on Lap 105 involving a large portion of the field left damage on the right-rear quarter-panel of the NAPA Chevy. The driver of the No. 9 pitted twice under caution to fix the damage before returning to the track and battling to get inside the top 20. After returning to the track, Elliott spent the remainder of the event trying to gain track position. By Lap 144, he had entered the top 10. He held that top-10 position for the remainder of the race and ultimately crossed the finish line in ninth – a career best track finish for the 23-year-old driver.
